The most superb fresh local produce is at the heart of every dish on the menu at The Cross Inn, Berwick and Borders restaurant, in the delightful village of Paxton near Berwick upon Tweed. The owner and chef, Mike, and his wife Julie are devoutly passionate about the use of the finest local seasonal produce throughout the year, and accordingly their wonderful menu changes almost daily, to the delight of their many regular diners. They have recently won gold at the local food awards.

Northumberland and the Scottish Borders are a veritable cornucopia of gastronomic delights, ripe for the picking, if you know where to look for them. Mike has an eye for perfect produce, and a superbly refined and select list of regular local suppliers.
Mike never tires in his search to find fresh sources of inspiration for his wonderful seasonal menu, from: Wild Tweed salmon and sea trout caught from the river Tweed at Paxton house, where you can go and watch our fish being caught by the local fishermen.
|
Wild handpicked mussles, from the holy island of Lindisfarne. Wonderfully smokey Craster kippers, Fresh lobster, crab, cod and langoustine all landed at Eyemouth and supplied by D.R Collins.
Local Cheviot Hills grazed lamb. Rare breeds of beef and pork from Forman’s the butchers. All beef is sourced from both sides of the border. Top quality Northumbrian potatoes from Cornhill-on-Tweed. The best seasonal vegetables, from Sinclair’s, the market gardeners, and the best selection of wild local game from Hutton Mill Estate. Not to mention the local organic free-range eggs, ice cream and cheeses from The Doddington award winning dairy.

The natural profusion of good sustenance in Northumberland and the Borders, makes Mike's quest to find these often overlooked small local sources of perfect fresh produce all the more poignant.
His support for local producers is a vital part of the local economy, and helps to encourage others to support fine local produce as well. Mikes eloquent cuisine at The Cross Inn, Berwick and Borders restaurant, is not only utterly delicious, but is leading the way in fine regional and seasonal food, that others can only hope to follow.
